Human Design Variables: Unlock Next-Level Alignment

Today, I want to talk to you about something that is often covered in later stages of diving into your Human Design but, personally, is my favorite and most applicable aspect of Human Design: Variables. They hold the key to how we eat, learn, see the world, and thrive in business.

Determined by the four arrows at the top of the chart ([get a free chart here]), they reveal how we best take in information, make decisions, and show up in the world. While there is much more depth to explore with tone and color, below are the basics of understanding your Variables.

1. Digestion - How You Process Information & Nourishment

The first variable (top left arrow) governs how you best digest food and information. It affects how you take in knowledge and the type of environment that supports your learning.

  • Left Arrow (Active Digestion): Individuals with a left-facing digestion arrow thrive on structured eating patterns and consistency. They also benefit from focused and disciplined learning.

  • Right Arrow (Passive Digestion): Those with a right-facing digestion arrow digest best in a more relaxed, unstructured manner. They learn best through osmosis and exposure rather than direct study.

2. Environment - Where You Thrive Best

The second variable (bottom left arrow) relates to the environment that best supports your energy and growth. Being in the right environment allows you to function optimally and feel at ease.

  • Left Arrow (Strategic Environment): People with a left-facing environment arrow function best in a structured, predictable, and stable setting. They thrive when they can control their surroundings.

  • Right Arrow (Receptive Environment): A right-facing environment arrow indicates adaptability. These individuals flourish in fluid, ever-changing spaces and benefit from exposure to new places and experiences.

3. Perspective - How You View the World

Your perspective variable (bottom right arrow) determines how you see the world and what type of awareness best serves you. It shapes how you interpret situations and make sense of life.

  • Left Arrow (Focused Perspective): Those with a left-facing perspective arrow have a strategic, detail-oriented approach to life. They excel at focusing on specifics and working through step-by-step processes.

  • Right Arrow (Peripheral Perspective): A right-facing perspective arrow signifies a broader, more abstract view of the world. These individuals benefit from seeing the bigger picture and often rely on intuition.

4. Motivation - What Drives You Forward

The fourth variable (top right arrow) governs your motivation, influencing how you pursue goals and take action in life. Understanding this helps you align with your natural drive.

  • Left Arrow (Strategic Motivation): Those with a left-facing motivation arrow are best suited for goal-setting and structured planning. They excel at setting clear objectives and working towards them methodically.

  • Right Arrow (Receptive Motivation): A right-facing motivation arrow suggests an intuitive and flexible approach to action. These individuals thrive when they follow their inner flow rather than rigid plans.
